Do You Have Their Attention?
If you want someone to follow your lead or change their behavior, the first step is always the same: Get their attention.
Clarity is useless if no one’s tuned in.
We’ve all been there:
“How many times do I have to say it?”
“Why doesn’t he listen?”
“I’ve told her three times!”
Frustrating, right?
So how do you get through?
The key is making a personal connection — whether that’s leaning in physically or emotionally.
Years ago, my son was coaching a kids’ baseball team. One player was constantly distracted. In a father-son check-in call, he asked for advice. I suggested he kneel to the boy's level and create a simple set of hand signals — a personal language between them.
Did it turn the boy into a star player? Probably not.
But it made him more focused and easier to coach.
Why? Because attention is the gateway to behavior change.
Remember: Get their attention. Everything else comes after.
