Shadow Strengths

Shadow strengths are my term for an individual's less apparent capabilities. I suspect that most of us are aware that we utilize only a portion of our cognitive abilities. The same holds true for our physical and emotional capabilities. We have untapped resources that could make work and life more manageable if we choose to use them.

Shadow strengths are precisely what the term implies, capabilities that exist outside of our conscious mind, quietly operating and supporting us only as needed. We take these strengths for granted because they are so effortless, so natural.

A critical part of my work with clients (and students) is teaching them how to leverage and use their shadow strengths effectively in work and life. The first task is to identify their shadow skills and talents.

They're critical in teaching the person(s) how to hone and improve their interactive work and management performance.  No personality or strength survey is required. I've been at this for quite a while and have learned that shadow strengths are automatic behavioral responses that are relatively easy to spot with practice. The challenge is learning how to leverage our personal gifts.
